Light from the sun will soon be supplying power to a California
college campus--thanks to Boeing Energy Solutions. The
solar panels being installed at California State University
in Northridge feature technology developed at Boeing’s
Spectrolab that cuts the cost of solar-generated energy by
concentrating more sunlight on fewer cells.
It began with an idea six years ago to send a handful of Boeing
Rotorcraft engineers in Philadelphia out west--to help
on the 787 program in Everett, Wash. Today, that group of engineers
numbers more than 200 and they support programs throughout
the company.
In 2008, Boeing acquired Tapestry Solutions of San Diego,
Calif. Now part of Defense, Space & Security, the Boeing
subsidiary has a computerized tracking system that is not unlike
the GPS in the family car. its Global Distribution Management
System network has proved very valuable to the U.S. Army, first
in Iraq and now in Afghanistan.
