WORLD HEADQUARTERS COMES OUT IN FULL FORCE FOR CHICAGO RIVER RACE

Boeing made a big splash at the recent Corporate Voyager Challenge, part of the annual Friends of the Chicago River Flatwater Classic. The event was supported by the Boeing World Headquarters Employee Volunteer Council.

With 12 boats and 108 employees, Boeing had the largest-ever showing by any company in the history the annual fund-raising event. In fact, because Boeing had so many boats entered, the Friends organization scheduled a special afternoon heat just for Boeing. Even then, the water at the starting line was crowded as each boat jockeyed for position.

On dry land, approximately 500 Boeing employees, friends and family members, clad in yellow "Shore Crew" T-shirts, cheered the Boeing teams as the paddlers passed by the WHQ building, which faces the Chicago River. Considering the number of paddlers (130 including alternates) and supporters, it is estimated that more than half of the World Headquarters population was involved in the event.

ROYAL AIR MAROC SELECTS 787 DREAMLINER; MULALLY MEETS KING OF MOROCCO

Boeing and Royal Air Maroc signed a memorandum of understanding in late July for the purchase of up to five 787 Dreamliners. The deal is expected to be finalized during the fourth quarter of 2005.

"Royal Air Maroc selected the 787 because of its unmatched capability and value after a thorough analysis," said Boeing Commercial Airplanes regional sales director Ihssane Mounir. "We look forward to working closely with Royal Air Maroc to bring the efficient, reliable, comfortable and quiet 787 into service."

The airline noted the advantages of the 787 that will allow it to operate more profitably with lower fuel burn, while providing its passengers with the Dreamliner's unique comfort and interior enhancements.

Separately, Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Alan Mulally attended a July 30 ceremony in Tangiers celebrating the anniversary of King Mohammed VI of Morocco's reign.

Mulally was one of 12 dignitaries personally greeted by the king, who recognized Boeing for its contributions to economic development in Morocco. Boeing strongly supported the U.S.-Moroccan Free Trade Agreement and partners with Royal Air Maroc in several joint ventures.

BOEING DELIVERS FIRST AH-64D APACHE LONGBOW FOR KUWAIT

Boeing in July delivered the first AH-64D Apache Longbow combat helicopter for Kuwait to the U.S. government. The aircraft, delivered from Boeing's Mesa, Ariz., facility, is the first of a 16-Apache foreign military sales order with the U.S. Department of Defense for Kuwait. The aircraft will remain in the United States until 2006 for qualification testing.

"From the initiation of the foreign military sale through production of the first Apache, the program has benefited from the close working relationships between the U.S. Army, Kuwaiti government representatives, Boeing and the other Apache industry teammates," said Bob Burns, Boeing manager for the Kuwait Apache program.

Maintenance personnel from Kuwait are in the United States for training, and will be followed by Kuwaiti pilots later this year.

Kuwait's ministry of defense initially signed a letter of offer and acceptance with the Department of Defense in 2002, making Kuwait the seventh international defense force to select the AH-64D and the 11th Apache customer worldwide.

HUMAN RESOURCES REVIEWING SALARIED JOB CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTIONS

Boeing Human Resources is reviewing Salaried Job Classification descriptions and their related competencies over the next several months by utilizing the knowledge of employees by job family.

The process is part of a companywide effort to improve processes and strengthen Boeing's ability to hire, develop, coach and promote employees.

Refining job descriptions will help employees

• Understand the competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics) required to perform a job effectively.
• Recognize there's a more consistent means of evaluating candidates against job requirements.
• Understand what's expected of employees in their current roles or in the roles they wish to pursue.

In addition to existing job information, this review process will add Standard Level Responsibility Guides for all levels. These provide detailed task and responsibility information for jobs by level and an expanded list of competencies specific to a job description.

First 777-300ER for EVA Air

EVA Air of Taiwan took delivery of its first 777-300ER (Extended Range) on July 28. The airplane, shown here taking off from the Boeing factory in Everett, Wash., is the first of 15 777s that EVA will receive through 2009. It carries the world’s most powerful commercial jet engine, GE’s GE90-115B.
