Past milestones, bright future: A timeline of key events

1950
Douglas C-47 (the military version of the DC-3) crews fly 4,689 casualties out of the Chosin Reservoir area in five days during the Korean War.

Douglas AD Skyraiders enter service over the Korean Peninsula.

1962
Korean Air Lines officially replaces the former Korean carrier Korean National Airlines.

 
 
   

1967
Korean Air receives its first new jetliner, a DC-9-30 delivery from Douglas Aircraft.

1969
Newly privatized Korean Air acquires its first long-range jet aircraft, a Boeing 707, and launches service to Japan, Hong Kong and China.
Republic of Korea (ROK) receives McDonnell F-4D fighters from the U.S. Air Force inventory beginning in 1969. The F-4E was also supplied to the ROK Air Force (ROKAF).

1971
Korean Air accepts its first airplane directly from Boeing, a new 707.

1973
Korean Air takes delivery of and introduces Boeing 747s on its Pacific routes (to Tokyo and the United States).

 

 

   

1976
Korean Air's Aerospace Division began manufacture of the Model 500 military helicopter under license from Hughes Helicopters. (Hughes would eventually become part of Boeing.)

1979
The U.S. Air Force takes delivery of Phantom No. 5,057, the last U.S.-built F-4 Phantom II aircraft. After delivery to the Air Force, No. 5,057 was turned over to the ROKAF.

1980
Korean Air takes delivery of its first Boeing 747-200 Freighter.

 

   

1988
ROK Army starts to receive Boeing Chinook rotorcraft.
Asiana Airlines is established and later in the year receives its first airplane, a Boeing 737-400. The airline also places its first order directly from Boeing, for a 767-300.

1991
Korean Air becomes the first Asian airline to use the new McDonnell Douglas MD-11 to supplement its new fleet of Boeing 747-400s.
Asiana Airlines takes delivery of its first 747-400 Combi.

1994
Asiana Airlines receives its first Boeing 747-400 Freighter.

   
   

1995
Asiana starts Seattle-to-Seoul service with Boeing 767-300ER (Extended Range) airplanes.

1997
The Aerospace Division of Korean Air delivers the nose structure for the second McDonnell Douglas MD-95 test aircraft (later renamed the Boeing 717).
Korean Air takes delivery of its first Boeing 777.

   
   

1998
Korean Air orders 27 Next-Generation 737s.

     
2000
ROKAF and Boeing conduct flight evaluations of the F-15E Strike Eagle, a version of which Boeing is proposing for South Korea's FX fighter aircraft competition.
Eight 737-800s are delivered to Korean Air.

2001
Korean Air becomes the first carrier in Asia to take delivery of a Boeing 737-900.
U.S. Army fields Apache Longbows to South Korea, marking the first international U.S. Army Apache Longbow deployment.
Boeing announces Aerospace Industry Development Plan to support development of the Korean aerospace industry.
Korean Air Aerospace is one of six Boeing suppliers to its commercial airplanes operations honored by the company for outstanding performance in 2000.
Asiana Airlines adds its first Boeing 777-200ER (Extended Range) to its fleet.

2002
Asiana takes delivery of the 400th Boeing 777.
ROKAF selects the Boeing F-15K as its FX fighter.
Boeing Korea names William Oberlin as president and Joseph Song as vice president, Aircraft & Missiles/Space & Communications (now Integrated Defense Systems).

   
     
   

2004
Korean Air takes delivery of its 100th Boeing airplane, a 747-400 Extended Range Freighter.

2005
Korean Air joins Boeing 787 Family with an order for up to 20 airplanes.
Boeing F-15K will be delivered to the Republic of Korea at the 2005 Seoul Air Show.

Korean Air Lines received its first airplane

2004
The Morning Star dance troupe performs at an August 2004 ceremony to commemorate the delivery of the 100th Boeing airplane to Korean Air. The milestone airplane was a Boeing 747-400 Extended Range Freighter.
