Taking the initiative

John HolzhauerWhen first hearing about the Employee Requested Transfer (ERT) process through the Quality Through Training Program, John Holzhauer was a bit skeptical. But he decided to give it a go.

Having been a machine assembly technician at the Portland, Ore., site for many years, Holzhauer felt he needed a change. He enrolled in training classes that focused on numerically controlled machines.

"ERT is a great way for employees to take the initiative to learn new skills," said Skip Paynter, Quality Through Training Program career advisor in Portland. "We're working to advance the skills of our current workforce to prepare them for the higher-skilled jobs anticipated in the future."

The ERT program is supported by the International Association of Machinists/Boeing Joint Programs. The program includes training employees whose jobs may be in jeopardy, recalled employees and active employees seeking to expand their skills for future positions.

"I would encourage my co-workers to use the ERT process," Holzhauer said. "I feel it's the best [training] program to date."

Holzhauer said he believes some employees don't bother to check out training opportunities, perhaps in part because of past experiences. "Some have little faith in the system," Holzhauer said. "But I feel I will be given an opportunity. And when the time comes, I'll be prepared."

Holzhauer is eagerly waiting for news on two positions for which he's applied.

"I want to learn and grow with The Boeing Company, and by being involved with the ERT program, I feel that I am," he said.
