Information
Technology represents a new age at Boeing. But even cutting-edge
services need to operate at maximum efficiency. Servers across
Boeing are our high-tech storage facilities. How can we use them
more cost-effectively? Our team, led by the Shared Services Group,
has been chartered to find out and make the necessary improvements.
First, we're looking at the server infrastructure at Boeing Commercial
Airplanes to streamline operating costs without compromising quality
or customer service. Our goal was to reduce 645 servers by 30 percent.
We are doing that partly by enabling multiple line-of-business
applications to run on the same piece of hardware, even when they
have different operating systems. So
far, we have "surplused" or redeployed more than 215
of BCA's servers and reassigned more than 155. Last year, we helped save millions
of dollars in recurring costs, and this year we expect to save several million
more. We see this as a great opportunity to improve the bottom line at Boeing.
But, as always, our Boeing
employee customers are our No. 1 priority. |
